I Am Afia, Megha, Abhimanyu, Omar
Each character is saying a story and struggling for his/her identity. Each character is talking about an issue and these issues are not much discussed in Indian cinema or in society.
Afia (nandita das) is a web designer duped by her husband want to create individual identity and also want child by her own through artificial insemination. She don’t trust a man at the same time she want to know the sperm donor so that she can understand what kind of genes her child will have.
Megha (Juhi Chawla) is a kahmiri pandit migrated to delhi due to communalism in Kashmir. She wants to sell her house in Kashmir and want to run away from the so called paradise on earth. I liked this part most.
Story of Omar (Arjun Mathur) shows how police still uses Article 377 to terrify people and extort money. Rahul Bose is also in the movie as Jai, a corporate professional, who is gay partner of Omar
Direction and screenplay
Onir directed the movie and Sanjay suri is producer and it is a fantastic movie. Their effort can be seen in the movie. Stories are narrated in distinctive way. Movie is on a fast pace, don’t bore you anywhere and involves you in the story. Artificial insemination is a topic I believe no one raised earlier.
Also the pain of Kashmiri Pandits is never shared on big screen much. The issue of kashmiri pandits hurts. How someone can be thrown out of his own house and get killed if denied. You can feel the daily life of a common man of srinagar through the movie.
All the actors are known for their acting. Everyone worked fantastically. Be it Nandita das who is desperate to get child, be it Purab Kohli who is medical student and sperm donor. Purab kohli loosen weight and looks like a students. His body language was quite expressive and defines the character.
Juhi Chawla is veteran. What to say about her? She showed the pain of kashmiri pandit very well. Sanjay Suri and Rahul Bose are masters in such movie. They are fantastic as usual.
Arjun Mathur who played Omar (seen in Luck by chance as struggling actor) also did well.
A fantastic and thoughtful movie to watch but it is not for everyone. This movie is for a different genre. 4 stars.
